Forest management based on canopy gaps is a silvicultural practice that relies on ecological aspects to promote the restoration of forest ecosystems. This study analyzes the response of natural regeneration to the opening of the upper canopy through the creation of light gaps. This intervention was carried out in a mature Nothofagus forest, which presents alterations in its composition and natural structure due to anthropogenic disturbances. Under the current conditions of the forest, the natural regeneration of species belonging to the genus Nothofagus, which make up the dominant forest type in the area, is limited by low competitiveness against other species better adapted to grow under the forest's upper canopy. This study collected information on the status of regeneration in the light gaps that are restricted from livestock through perimeter closure, measuring parameters of species abundance and richness. The main results demonstrate that this silvicultural practice yields positive outcomes regarding the establishment of natural regeneration, as there was presence of the species targeted for regeneration, mainly pioneer species, thus fulfilling the primary objective of this silvicultural management.esCC BY-NC-ND 4.0 DEED Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 InternationalManejo forestalRegeneración forestalNothofagusCaracterización regeneración natural y plantaciones suplementarias en hoyos de luz, en el Bien Nacional Protegido Ranchillo Alto, Región de Ñuble.Thesis
