This thesis analyzed the thickening process of the collective Cu – Mo concentrate at the Chuquicamata Division, specifically in the head thickeners (C6 and C7), with the objective of identifying flocculants more efficient than the plant reagent SFIT 320. An experimental program was executed that included mineralogical characterization (QEMSCAN/XRD), the construction of the dilution curve for the current flocculant, and batch settling tests. Critical parameters such as settling rate, overflow turbidity (NTU), and compaction percentage were evaluated under the influence of operational variables including dosage, pH (7.5 – 11.9), solids percentage (15 – 35%), and fine clay content (illite); additionally, the use of a coagulant (SFIT 575) and its synergy with alternative reagents (SNF, Kemira, Brenntag, and others) was examined. The results showed that SFIT 320 presented limited performance, with a low settling rate (~0.4 m/h) and turbid overflows (>400 NTU). In contrast, liquid flocculants SNF 532 and SNF 630 improved clarity (111 – 133 NTU). However, the solid flocculant TC - 323 (a polymer-starch hybrid) stood out as the best technical alternative, achieving the highest settling rate (~2.6 m/h) with minimal turbidity (<90 NTU) and superior compaction (53.2%). Furthermore, it maintained its efficacy with reduced doses of 10 – 15 g/t, implying a reagent saving of between 40% and 60%. Reagent K - 1883 was validated as the best liquid alternative due to its high kinetics. It was determined that operating at 30% solids and pH 10.5 – 10.8 maximizes the balance between rate and clarity, while excess reagent proved counterproductive. The industrial validation in the collective concentrate thickener C6 corroborated the importance of operational control: by adjusting the preparation and dosing of the flocculant, suspended solids decreased from 0.49 to 0.20 g/L. Finally, flotation tests revealed that excess residual flocculant causes physical entrainment of copper and gangue (an increase in weight recovery of ~20%) which the NaSH depressant fails to chemically mitigate, generating inefficient consumption of this reagent. It is concluded that TC - 323 should replace SFIT 320 and that minimizing dosage in the thickeners is key to avoiding "silent depression" and optimizing selectivity downstream.esCC BY-NC-ND 4.0 DEED Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 InternationalMolibdenoSedimentaciónFloculantesEvaluación de reactivos para espesadores de concentrado colectivo planta de molibdeno División Chuquicamata, CODELCO.Thesis
