The species Acaena pinnatifida (Ruiz et Pav) is one of the dominant species in the subalpine
community of the Andes Mountains and grows mainly in the Andean areas of Chile and
Argentina. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial
effect of the aqueous extract, differentiating between its aerial parts and root. To determine
the antioxidant activity, the methods with the DPPH radical (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil)
and the ABTS radical (2,2'-Azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) were used.
On the other hand, measurements were made to determine the amounts of total polyphenols
using the Folin-Ciocalteu method delivered in gallic acid equivalents and the determination
of the amount of total flavonoids with catechin equivalents, obtaining a greater effect on the
aerial part of A. pinnatifida. The values obtained for the content of polyphenols in gallic acid
equivalents in the aerial part and root were 149.87 ± 2.04 and 115.37 ± 3.10 mg, respectively.
On the other hand, the content of flavonoids expressed in catechin was 119.33 ± 4.04 mg
for aerial part and 91.67 ± 5.51 mg for root, in 1000 mg of aqueous extract.
In addition, an assay was developed to determine the antimicrobial activity of the plant with
bacterial and fungal pathogens, where no effect was observed on any pathogen used.
Through this investigation and with the data obtained, it is possible to conclude that the
extracts of the aerial part and root of A. pinnatifida have an antioxidant effect, however, the
results obtained for the antimicrobial activity were not satisfactory, which were carried out in
a single concentration of aqueous extract. In comparation with other studies of this species,
this study was carried out with an aqueous extract.
The constant search for new sources of natural antioxidants and the application of methods
to evaluate said effects is important, leaving the door open to possible uses related to the
biological effect of the plant.
