Abstract
Currently, the increased use of digital media has facilitated cultural exchange around the world. For this reason, the intervention of translators through audiovisual translation (AVT) has been crucial in promoting the consumption of this content. This study aims to analyze the strategies used to translate puns and to assess how much of the original communicative intent is preserved. A descriptive-comparative analysis was carried out between the original content and the Spanish dubbing of 53 puns found in the children's series Paw Patrol. To this end, translation techniques were used according to Delabastita's (1996) typology, and a semantic loss measurement scale was created based on the stipulations of Baker (1992). The results showed that three techniques from Delabastita's typology (1996) predominated, namely PUN → NON-PUN, PUN → PUN, and PUN → ZERO, with PUN → NON-PUN obtaining the highest percentage of occurrences. On the other hand, with regard to semantic loss, both PUN → NON-PUN and PUN → PUN were dominated by partial semantic loss, while PUN → ZERO was dominated by total semantic loss. Therefore, this study concluded that the humorous communicative intent of the series was not preserved in most of the translation of the puns in the Spanish dubbing.
