Due to pollution problems, high seismic activity in the region, and a housing deficit, timber is a suitable material for constructing new buildings without generating environmental costs or significant economic losses. However, due to a lack of regulations and high regulatory demands, wooden construction has been limited in the country, which contrasts with the international reality. Hence the importance of studying light wood-frame buildings. During a seismic event, walls are subject to the simultaneous action of vertical, shear, and bending moment forces in the plane. In a mid-rise building, these internal forces can reach significant magnitudes, especially on the lower floors, and could have a significant influence on the lateral behavior of the walls. The current national regulations do not consider the effect of vertical loads on the lateral strength of the walls. To address this issue, five wall typologies are defined to study the effect of axial compressive loads on the lateral strength of light wood-frame shear walls. The results are compared with the strength proposed by national regulations to determine if the calculation is being done conservatively.
