Item Potencial de hongos marinos en la reducción de plástico en el océano.(Universidad de Concepción., 2023) Ferrari Guevara, Mario Stefano; Gutiérrez Astete, Marcelo HernánPlastic pollution in the marine environment produces a series of negative impacts on the ecosystem, where the consequences become more severe over time, affecting various marine organisms. In recent years, some marine fungi able to degrade these synthetic polymers have been discovered, such as Aspergillus spp, Fusarium spp, Penicillium spp and Zelerion maritimum. In this work, we analyze the potential of marine fungi isolated from the subtidal zone of Dichato, Biobio region, to degrade plastics by exposing fragments of different types of plastics to natural marine conditions. A total of 9 strains were isolated, mainly from polyethylene fragments. The isolated strains were subjected to guaiacol oxidation tests which allowed the identification of 5 strains with an enzymatic complex potentially usable in plastic degradation. Subsequently, these strains were incubated with different plastics (PET, LDPE) as the only carbon source, obtaining the degradation of polyethylene by the 5 strains in a period of one month. Additionally, the growth rates of the strains were calculated in Petri dishes with 5 carbon sources for 15 days, reaching a maximum growth of 86 mm in only 11 days for one of the strains in the totality of the treatments. Our results suggest that marine fungal strains isolated from subtidal environments represent a potential alternative for the degradation of plastics applicable to biodegradation treatments.
