Ruthenium catalysts were synthesized using SiO2 based materials. SBA-15 and commercial SiO2 whose surfaces were modified by the incorporation of amine and carboxylic acid functional groups were used for the preparation of the catalysts. The functionalization of the supports is carried out through successive reactions of the support with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) and subsequent reaction with succinic anhydride which is generated between the amine functional group of APTES and the anhydride function. The final catalysts are prepared by wet impregnation of a ruthenium precursor. The materials were characterized by adsorption-desorption isotherms with N2 at 77K, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for all the samples, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) only for the supports. The characterization allowed to verify an effective surface modification of supports used with amino and carboxylic acid groups, finding that these modifications generate an effect on both the size and dispersion of ruthenium obtaining a decrease in particle diameter with a narrow size distribution - with respect to pristine supports - particularly in those with carboxylic acid generates ruthenium particles of smaller size reaching values of 5. 3 nm, a dispersion of 24.3% for the case of the SiO2 support while a value of 4.1 nm and a dispersion of 31.5% was reached in the case of the SBA-15 support. The results of this research are useful to develop Ru catalysts with improved dispersion by controlling the Ru particle size and thus generating systems that are interesting for catalytic applications.
