Abstract

In this thesis the conceptual design of an electric Formula SAE vehicle for the University of Concepción is addressed. The vehicle is treated as a complex system that involves mechanical, electrical, electronic and control subsystems. In view of the university’s planned participation in the competition and the absence of a reference architecture, a system architecture is proposed to structure the development of the single-seater and to manage its complexity using Systems Engineering principles and MBSE approaches, in line with INCOSE. An iterative process is followed, starting from the mission analysis and the identification of stakeholders, needs and vehicle requirements. On this basis, the Concept of Operations and the Operational Life Cycle are established, and the system architecture is then developed through a successive decomposition of the vehicle and its enabling systems. The main results include the formulation of an architecture that organizes the FSAE system into coherent segments, elements and subsystems, structured around five major functional groups of the vehicle and its supporting systems. The model registers 197 requirements, structured and hierarchically allocated, which allows their compliance to be traced across the Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) and the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). The energy model provides order-of-magnitude estimates of the accumulator’s energy, mass and cost that are consistent with FSAE references, and demonstrates the usefulness of integrating sizing calculations within an MBSE environment to support early assessment of the technical and economic feasibility of the solution. It is concluded that the proposed architecture provides a methodological baseline applicable to future design cycles. This work offers an academic case study of Systems Engineering applied to university competition vehicles and can serve as an exportable example for other teams wishing to structure their project within a Systems Engineering framework.
