Abstract
Elodea canadensis is a submerged macrophyte native to North America, which has been present in Chile over the past five decades. It exhibits adapted organs with structural characteristics that are helpful; as a provider of shelter and food for insects and aquatic organisms, as a source of food and forage, and as a biomonitor. The latter has been more widely recognized due to its high distribution potential and, Chile is positioned in the accumulation capacity for contaminants in aquatic ecosystems such as wetlands. Recognizing the current water scarcity and the significant need for future generations, various circular technologies have been proposed, such as phytoremediation, a method that demonstrates Elodea canadensis's great capacity to accumulate metals and, consequently, the purification of wastewater for its next use. This monograph is a bibliographic review divided into 5 chapters that consider the characteristics of Elodea canadensis, the characteristics of phytoremediation, the description and origin of wastewater, and concludes with how Elodea is part of phytoremediation alternatives and the future scope of both.
