Abstract
This study aims to characterize the process of motivational regulation in the face of challenges experienced by technology entrepreneurs in the Biobío region, in order to understand the mechanisms they use to maintain, recover, or adapt their motivation in contexts of uncertainty. The study is motivated by the importance of motivation in the entrepreneurial process, especially in the technology sector, where entrepreneurial trajectories are often marked by high demands, uncertainty, financial pressure, the need for constant innovation, and challenges associated with the regional context. Within this framework, the study focuses on a dimension that has received limited attention in entrepreneurship research: how entrepreneurs regulate their motivation throughout their experiences. A qualitative, cross-sectional study was conducted, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a sample of 14 entrepreneurs from the technology ecosystem of the Biobío region. The instrument was validated through expert review and then administered either in person or online, with audio recording, informed consent, and confidentiality safeguards. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis, which made it possible to identify patterns associated with the motivational regulation processes of the participating entrepreneurs. The results show that loss of motivation does not occur in isolation, but rather as a consequence of critical processes linked to economic, emotional, administrative, and contextual factors. The most frequent triggers included market uncertainty, limited support networks, perceived disadvantages, low sales, financial pressure, and emotional exhaustion. In response to these situations, entrepreneurs activate various motivational regulation strategies, including reconnecting with their sense of purpose, seeking support through networks, and taking breaks for self-care. The findings also show that motivation changes over time and tends to shift from an initial impulse to a more mature form sustained by discipline, responsibility, and clarity of purpose. Finally, the study contributes to understanding motivational regulation as a dynamic and relevant process for the sustainability of technology entrepreneurship, providing useful insights for future support, training, and guidance strategies for entrepreneurs in the regional ecosystem.
