dc.description.abstractThis study investigates the relationship between speaking skills and receptive vocabulary knowledge in 8th and 9th -grade Chilean students in a semi-private and a private school, respectively, with the objective of establishing a correlation between the two variables. This cross-sectional, non-experimental research, with a quantitative approach, took 54 students from a semi-private school and 33 from a private school. Their speaking skills were assessed using the speaking part of the Key English Test (KET) for the 8th graders, the Preliminary English Test (PET) for the 9th graders, and the whole sample’s receptive vocabulary knowledge by the Updated Vocabulary Levels Test (UVLT). The findings indicated that 8 th -grade students possess a low level of receptive vocabulary knowledge and low speaking proficiency. On the other hand, 9 th -grade students showed relatively high performances in UVLT and PET. Furthermore, the degree of correlation for both groups was positive when the speaking skill was correlated with UVLT results in their totality, but inconsistencies were X found when doing so with UVLT results by band. These results can be attributed to institutional instruction, age, overall proficiency, commitment to the testing, amongst other factors.en
dc.description.abstractEste estudio investiga la relación entre la habilidad oral y el conocimiento del vocabulario receptivo de inglés en estudiantes chilenos de 8º básico y 1º medio en una escuela particular subvencionada y una privada, respectivamente. Esta investigación transversal, no experimental, con un enfoque cuantitativo, incluyó a 54 estudiantes de una escuela semi-privada y 33 de una privada. Sus habilidades de expresión oral fueron evaluadas utilizando la parte oral del Key English Test (KET) para los estudiantes de 8º básico y el Preliminary English Test (PET) para los de 1° medio. El conocimiento del vocabulario receptivo de toda la muestra se midió mediante el Updated Vocabulary Levels Test (UVLT). Los hallazgos indicaron que los estudiantes de 8° básico poseen un bajo nivel de conocimiento del vocabulario receptivo y una baja competencia en expresión oral, mientras que los estudiantes de 1° medio mostraron rendimientos relativamente altos en el UVLT y el PET. Además, se encontró una correlación positiva entre las habilidades de expresión oral y los resultados generales del UVLT para ambos grupos, aunque aparecieron inconsistencias al analizar los resultados del UVLT por banda. Estos resultados pueden atribuirse a factores como la instrucción institucional, la edad, la competencia general y el compromiso con el proceso de evaluaciónes
