Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the maintenance of historical references in the translation of cultural linguistic aspects (CLA) present in the Chilean biographical miniseries Isabel, according to the domesticating or foreignizing method (Venuti, 1995). This was based on Martí Ferriol's (2006) continuum for grading translation techniques, according to the method proposed by Venuti (1995). To define the sample, Igareda's (2011) categorization of cultural elements was used, complemented with an operational definition of CLA created by the researchers, and inclusion and exclusion criteria proposed for this study. The most recurrent techniques in the translation of the 140 ALCs identified were the established equivalent, modulation, and variation. Consequently, foreignization and domestication were used in equal frequency, while neutralization was rare. In addition, each ALC was categorized according to its degree of time. Findings included 90 “timeless” CLAs, 6 “current” CLAs, 25 in “disuse” and 19 “with particularities” of use. In the analysis of the latter two, 14 were found to retain epochal features. The established equivalent and modulation were predominant, along with the foreignizing method. Given the results, it was possible to conclude that there was no preference for any one method in the total translation of the sample. However, it was observed that the historical references of the CLAs were maintained in 31.8% of the subtitles in English, through mostly foreignizing techniques.
