Abstract
The subject of the investigation are statements that express a meaning but fail in their claim to a normative character. The study therefore aims to find out which factors deprive our statements of their normative character. This is done on the basis of the debate about the unity of the proposition as a philosophical frame of reference. The first chapter therefore presents the debate on the unity of the proposition as a philosophical background for the development of the research. The second chapter aims to show the central features of a recognised proposal within the above-mentioned debate, which is characterised by the fact that it claims that norms are a kind of proposition, namely: the proposal developed by Peter Hanks. On the basis of the framing undertaken in the first two chapters, some of the factors that remove the normative character of propositions are then developed. The third chapter identifies the limits of normative language that emerge from the study of grammar, while the fourth chapter explains the circumstances that must be present for a proposition to be considered normative by analysing the metaphor of direction of fit. As a result of the research, it is possible to be satisfied with a set of criteria and factors that must be present in order for the statements used to formulate norms to fulfil their normative claim.
