Abstract
Introduction Acne is a disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the sebaceous follicles and usually occurs in adolescents and young adults, although it can manifest itself at any age. Lately, the theory that diet may be involved in the pathogenesis has gained prominence, because people who eat a Western diet have more acne. The objective is to determine the dietary components that influence the severity of acne. Methods A search was performed in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library search engines for observational studies, controlled clinical trials and systematic reviews published in the last 10 years in English or Spanish. Those that were not fully available and that focused on other diseases were excluded. A total of 24 articles were finally selected. Conclusion Dietary components that appear to worsen the disease are dairy products, high glycemic index and/or glycemic load diets, high sodium foods, and sunflower seeds. Those that show a beneficial effect are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin D, berberine, and fruits, vegetables and fish.
