Abstract
This research analyzes the characteristics and impacts of international migration in the commune of Concepción, within a regional context of low migratory density compared to other areas of Chile. This scenario presents both challenges and opportunities, particularly in terms of socio-territorial integration and the strengthening of multiculturalism. Through a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative), the study seeks to understand how the migrant population occupies public space, what socio-spatial transformations it generates in the commune, and the logics that determine its location, integration, and visibility in the city of Concepción. Although Concepción does not currently experience migratory flows on the scale of Greater Santiago, according to data from the latest 2024 census (INE, 2024), there is evidence of an increasing presence and influence in public spaces, especially in central areas and other key sites linked to economic and social dynamics, such as markets and university environments. The study also examines the characteristics and location of migrants in peripheral sectors, identifying dynamics associated with socio-spatial segregation phenomena driven by rental prices and current market logics, which may intensify territorial exclusion processes, especially among vulnerable social groups. In summary, this research aims to provide empirical and conceptual evidence to better understand migratory processes in Chilean regional capitals from a critical geographical perspective, while highlighting how the migrant population, even in precarious contexts, actively participates in the construction and resignification of urban space.
