Abstract
La Familia Proteaceae distribuida en Chile, está representada por las especies Embothrium coccineum, Gevuina avellana, Lomatia ferruginea, Lomatia hirsuta, Lomatia dentata y Orites myrtoidea. De estas, Gevuina avellana se ha trasformado en el ejemplar más representativo de la familia como una especie de importancia industrial, gastronómica, farmacéutica, medicinal, ornamental, potencial agronómico y de gran valor cultural para las comunidades del sur de Chile. Por su parte en resto de las especies de Proteaceas de Chile, cuentan un gran potencial de uso en proyectos de restauración ecológica, rehabilitación de paisajes y entornos degradados y con un alto valor ornamental. Lomatia ferruginea destaca por su atractivo vetado, por lo que es usada en la fabricación de artesanía, muebles y artículos de joyería; Lomatia hirsuta favorece la calidad del suelo y la biodiversidad del jardín debido a que es capaz de fijar nitrógeno atmosférico; Orites myrtoidea, presenta un destacado potencial ornamental, debido a su resistencia y naturaleza rústica; además, sus raíces proteiformes brindan beneficios adicionales, al aumentar la disponibilidad de fósforo y ayudar a especies vecinas. Lomatia dentata es muy valorada en la medicina tradicional de Sudamérica por su contenido de compuestos antioxidantes y antiinflamatorios.
The Proteaceae Family is distributed in Chile, being represented by the species Embothrium coccineum, Gevuina avellana, Lomatia ferruginea, Lomatia hirsute, Lomatia dentata and Orites myrtoidea. The Gevuina avellana species has become the most representative specimen of the family as a species of industrial, gastronomic, pharmaceutical, medicinal, ornamental importance, agronomic potential and of great cultural value for the communities of southern Chile. On the other hand, in the rest of the species of Proteaceae of Chile, they have great potential for use in projects of ecological restoration, rehabilitation of landscapes and degraded environments and with a high ornamental value. Lomatia Ferruginea stands out for its attractive veining, which is why it is used in the manufacture of handicrafts, furniture, and jewelry. Lomatia hirsuta has the quality of favoring the quality of the soil and the biodiversity of the garden because it is capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Orites myrtoidea, presents an outstanding ornamental potential, due to its resistance and rustic nature. In addition, its protean roots provide additional benefits, by increasing the availability of phosphorus and helping neighboring species. Lastly, Lomatia dentata is highly valued in South American traditional medicine for its content of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.
