Abstract
La traducción de elementos culturales, o culturemas, es considerada un desafío dentro del ámbito de la traducción. En el caso de la literatura fantástica, esta dificultad se intensifica al considerar la importancia del traspaso de contenido cultural propio de la cultura origen a un público de lengua meta. El presente estudio propone analizar la equivalencia traductora (Hurtado, 2001) en traducciones de culturemas de tres ediciones en español. Se realizó un análisis comparativo entre las versiones de 1977 (Chile), 2005 (España) y 2023 (español neutro) de 69 culturemas identificados en la novela The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Para ello, se aplicó la clasificación de culturemas propuesta por Igareda (2011), así como las técnicas de traducción descritas por Molina (2006), junto con criterios propios de esta investigación. Los resultados mostraron que la traducción de 1977 fue la que eliminó más elementos culturales, la de 2005 mantuvo de mejor manera la intención del autor original y la de 2023 acerca la novela a un público más diverso al utilizar elementos neutrales. Del análisis realizado se desprende que la traducción de elementos culturales en la literatura fantástica continúa representando un reto significativo, y las decisiones traductológicas se ven influenciadas por factores sociohistóricos y geográficos.
The translation of cultural elements, or culturemes, is considered a challenge within the translation field. In the case of fantasy literature, this difficulty becomes even more pronounced considering the importance of conveying culturally specific content from the source culture to a target language audience. The present study intends to analyze translator equivalence (Hurtado, 2001) of culturemas translation across three Spanish-language editions. A comparative analysis was performed using the 1977 (Chile), 2005 (Spain) and 2023 (neutral) translations of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, focusing on 69 culturemes. To do so, the cultureme classification proposed by Igareda (2011), the translation techniques described by Molina (2006), and criteria specific to this study were applied. The results showed that the 1977 translation deleted the greatest number of cultural elements, the 2005 version maintained the author’s original intention more effectively, and the 2023 version brought the novel closer to a more diverse audience by using neutral elements. The analysis shows that translating cultural elements in fantasy literature remains a significant challenge, and that translation decisions are influenced by sociohistorical and geographical factors.
