Abstract

In this study, conducted using a mixed approach (qualitative/quantitative), the translated cultural referents of the Regency era in the book “Seduciendo a Mr. Brigterton” were analysed. This analysis was conducted because the Bridgerton series has only a single Spanish translation for all Spanish-speaking countries; therefore, it was of interest to investigate the translation trend, in other words, whether there was a tendency toward “foreignization” or “domestication”, as described by Casas-Tost & Ling (2014). The analysis was conducted considering those referents from the fourth book of the series that appeared in dictionaries under the category “old-fashioned” and in Regency glossaries. Cultural referents were identified and then classified using the modified table by Reyes (2019), then the types of translation techniques used were identified according to Molina (2006), and then the referents were finally analysed using the continuum proposed by Reyes (2019) and the one by Leiva & Negrín (2024) to determine the domesticating or foreignizing tendency of the referents. Two measurement tools were used because there are no Spanish versions to compare. As a result, both methodological tools revealed a strong tendency toward foreignization.
