This study investigated the effectiveness of comic books as multimodal resources in enhancing reading comprehension among Chilean high school students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using an action research methodology, the intervention focused on integrating explicit reading strategies, such as skimming, scanning, and visualization, within the context of reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz graphic novel. Over four instructional sessions, participants were exposed to multimodal texts and guided to apply reading strategies. Pre and Post intervention assessments revealed significant improvements in students’ reading comprehension levels, with the majority advancing to higher proficiency bands of the CEFR scale. The findings underscore the potential of comic books to foster engagement and comprehension through the integration of textual and visual elements. However, limitations such as the short intervention period and reliance on a single multimodal text highlight areas for future research. Recommendations include expanding the duration of interventions and incorporating diverse multimodal material to cater to varied learner needs.en
