Abstract
Trade-offs between ecosystem services arise from human decision-making and can alter the magnitude and type of service provided at different scales. In the Ñuble Region, a trend of land use change from agriculture to forestry was observed between 1986 and 2023. As a consequence, there was a decrease in the provision of cultivated terrestrial plants for nutritional purposes and an increase in local climate regulation through carbon storage. This trade-off has different implications at the regional scale, but there are no studies related to its magnitude and spatial location. This work aims to provide information on the spatial-temporal pattern of this trade-off. For this purpose, the potential supply of both services was evaluated for the years 1986 and 2023. This information was spatialized to assess the pattern of change. It was concluded that the expansion of forest areas can contribute to mitigate the effects of climate change, but it can also restrict the space available for agriculture, which is crucial for meeting the population's food demands and guaranteeing their well-being. The importance of analyzing and quantifying trade-offs between ecosystem services is emphasized to propose strategies for natural resource management and land use.
