Abstract
El avellano chileno (Gevuina avellana Mol.) es la única especie del género Gevuina, de la familia Proteaceae. Se encuentra extensamente distribuido en Chile, especialmente en la zona centro-sur como sur del país, donde predomina el clima templado húmedo, creciendo asociado a otras especies nativas, dando origen a bosques siempre verdes. Es una especie con gran interés agronómico por las características que presenta su fruto (avellana) lo que hace posible la obtención de diversos productos y subproductos. Por otro lado, se ha generado un interés en la floricultura, paisajismo y en la industria maderera artesanal por las cualidades de su follaje, floración, fructificación y madera; factores por los cuales se le ha considerado una especie con un creciente interés agronómico.
The chilean hazel (Gevuina avellana Mol.) is the only species of the genus Gevuina, of the family Proteaceae. It is widely distributed in Chile, especially in the center-south and south of the country, where the humid temperate climate predominates, growing in association with other native species, giving rise to evergreen forests. It is a species of great agronomic interest due to the characteristics of its fruit (hazelnut), which makes it possible to obtain various products and by-products. On the other hand, it has generated an interest in floriculture, landscaping and in the artisan wood industry for the qualities of its foliage, flowering, fruiting and wood; factors for which it has been considered a species with a growing agronomic interest.
