| dc.description.abstract | La presente investigación aborda la problemática existente con respecto a las amenazas y declive en las poblaciones de pingüinos de Humboldt (Spheniscus humboldti). Para este caso se toma como área de estudio la Península de Hualpén, ubicada en la región del Biobío, Chile. El objetivo principal es caracterizar el área de estudio como una zona importante para las poblaciones de pingüinos de Humboldt, con el fin de poner a disposición información relevante y verificada para futuras búsqueda de nuevas herramientas para su protección y preservación. Para este fin se realizó un monitoreo de aves, los cuales incluyeron la abundancia de S. humboldti durante 24 meses, y complementados con monitoreos propios realizados durante el verano del año 2025. El objetivo de analizar los datos es caracterizar el estado actual de las poblaciones de pingüinos, respecto a su abundancia espacio-temporal, con herramientas cuantitativos como RStudio y el posterior mapeo de su distribución a través de SIG. En la segunda etapa de esta investigación se realizaron cinco entrevistas semi-estructuradas a actores clave ligados al turismo, residentes e investigadores de la zona, ésto con el fin de conocer las perspectivas de la población con respecto al pingüino de Humboldt en la península. Los resultados confirman la presencia de la especie S. humboldti dentro de la península de Hualpén, e identificando cinco sitios importantes. También cabe destacar el aumento de abundancia durante la época estival y una disminución poblacional durante los meses de invierno. Además, las entrevistas nos permiten caracterizar a la especie como un ave insignia o emblema de la zona, atrayendo turistas, lo que aporta a la economía circular y se reconoce como una especie centinela, siendo un indicador de la salud del ecosistema. Se puede concluir que la Península de Hualpén es un área importante para el pingüino de Humboldt y que debe ser protegida para la subsistencia de la especie, lo que además haría un efecto paraguas, protegiendo a las demás especies con las que co-habita. | es |
| dc.description.abstract | This research addresses the existing problems regarding threats and declines in Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) populations. The Hualpén Peninsula, located in the Biobío region of Chile, is the study area for this case. The main objective is to characterize the study area as an important zone for Humboldt penguin populations, in order to provide relevant and verified information for future research into new tools for their protection and preservation. To this end, bird monitoring was conducted, which included the abundance of S. humboldti for 24 months, complemented by our own monitoring carried out during the summer of 2025. The objective of analyzing the data is to characterize the current status of Humboldt penguin populations, with respect to their spatiotemporal abundance, using quantitative tools such as RStudio and subsequently mapping their distribution through GIS. In the second stage of this research, five semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders including community actors linked to tourism, research, and residents in the area. The aim was to understand the population's perspectives on the Humboldt penguin on the peninsula. The results confirm the presence of S. humboldti within the Hualpén Peninsula, identifying five important sites. It is also worth highlighting the increase in abundance during the summer season and a population decline during the winter months. Furthermore, the interviews allow us to characterize the species as a flagship or emblem of the area, attracting tourists, contributing to the circular economy, and being recognized as a sentinel species, an indicator of ecosystem health. It can be concluded that the Hualpén Peninsula is an important area for the Humboldt penguin and must be protected for the survival of the species. This would also create an umbrella effect, protecting the other species with which it coexists. | en |
