Abstract

Being an intermediate space that fails to consolidate, having characteristics of both the urban and rural worlds, mainly affecting rural areas, which have gradually been decreasing and there has been a destructuring of what were its key characteristics and its role within the local reality. In the surroundings of Chillán we have observed how with the flooding of the urban area, driven by the need to create new residential areas, it has replaced what were agricultural areas and with soils suitable for working the land. This phenomenon brings with it long-term economic and social consequences where the city is less and less self-sufficient and not all inhabitants have the ability to reinvent themselves in the face of the changes that are taking place. In addition, rapid urban expansion is not always accompanied by development on a par with infrastructure and services, which brings discontent among the inhabitants along with the transfer of typical problems from urban sectors to rural sectors.
