Abstract
Tulip production in Chile is growing, making it essential to optimize production management to improve the competitiveness of the national floriculture sector. This research seeks to evaluate the effect of harvesting method (with or without bulbs) on flower quality and duration in three varieties: lle de France, Curly Sue, and Pink Ardour. In a completely randomized experimental design study, plant elongation (cm), days to onset of senescence, and days post-harvest life were evaluated under natural environmental conditions. Harvesting method did not influence the number of days post-harvest. The Curly Sue variety showed a longer post-harvest life when harvested with bulbs, unlike Pink Ardour and Ile de France. Harvesting method did not significantly influence the onset of senescence in any variety. According to the descriptive analysis, Ile de France had the highest number of days post-harvest life (10 days) and the latest onset of senescence (7.5 days). Each cultivar responded differently to the treatment, responses that could have been determined by both genetic and physiological characteristics, as well as by its tolerance to stress.
