Abstract
In the present study, the translations into International Latin American Spanish and Argentine Spanish of extralinguistic and intralinguistic cultural references originally in English, collected from the movie The Incredibles, were analyzed. The goal was to determine the trends towards universality and specificity in two versions that share the same linguistic code but differ in their scope and variety. The aim of this was to observe whether the inherent universal or specific nature of each version was reflected in the dubbing of the cultural references from the original version, which are characteristic of North American culture, or if a different approach was followed. The analysis was carried out using a qualitative approach with a comparative descriptive scope, which involved the use of tables to organize the cultural referents collected according to the criteria of Igareda (2011) along with their translations. These cultural references were then classified according to the thematic categories presented by the same author, and the translation techniques used were identified based on those proposed by Martinez (2015). Finally, the analysis of trends towards universality and specificity was conducted using a self-developed model aimed at systematizing this process, based on the translation techniques used. After analyzing the translations of all the cultural references, it was concluded that universality plays a significant role in both dubbings, and the difference in this trend is either marginally different or non-existent. On the other hand, both dubbed versions tend to a lesser extent towards specificity, but within this trend there is a clear orientation of each dubbing towards the source language (SL) or the target language (TL).
