Abstract
Responsible pet ownership in Chile is increasingly relevant due to its impact on public health and animal welfare. Adopting responsible practices involves providing a safe environment, proper veterinary care, and adequate nutrition. These practices benefit both animals and people, improving quality of life. However, stray dogs remain a challenge, underscoring the need for public policies and educational programs. This study evaluated the impact of an educational program on responsible pet ownership, focusing on dogs, among 2nd-year students at Colegio Hispano Americano Río Viejo in Chillán, Chile. With 64 students, the program included six sessions covering animal welfare, responsible ownership law, and the relationship between human and animal well-being. A pre-test was given before the program and a post-test after, measuring the students' knowledge. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistical techniques and the Wilcoxon test. Results showed a significant knowledge increase, raising the average correct responses from 50% to 80%. Improvements were consistent across all categories, with notable gains in understanding the Responsible Pet Ownership Law. The program proved effective, suggesting that similar programs in other institutions could foster a more conscious and responsible society regarding pet ownership.
