Abstract
The Agua Fría spring, located in the Valle de las Trancas, Chillán, exhibits a particular behavior with a variable flow rate throughout the year, due to the permeable soils from volcanic formations present in the mountain valleys. This study estimated the recharge area of the Agua Fría spring through two approaches: delineating the contributing watershed and performing a hydrological balance using runoff and annual precipitation data. Using flow rates observed during the years 2023-2024, with field data collected on-site, flow simulations were carried out using the HBV model. To evaluate the model's accuracy, the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Index was used. The results suggest that the recharge area of the spring has a contributing area in the range of 23 to 30 km².
