Abstract
Introduction: Stigmas are part of the social construct that excludes people who are not within the social norm, these can have an impact on the mental health of people and influence the valuation of capabilities made by the community, especially the family bond. Objective: To analyze the influence of stigmas in the assessment of capacities of women with Borderline Personality Disorder from the perspective of parents belonging to the Corporación Viviendo con TLP. Methodology: Qualitative study with phenomenological approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews as the main data collection technique. The study was carried out with the participation of 9 mothers and 1 father belonging to the Corporación Viviendo con TLP, who had a close and close relationship with their daughters and who also lived in the same household. The interviews were conducted through two modalities: face to-face and online. Results: The most frequent stigma corresponds to the perceived or anticipated stigma related to the possible risks that their daughters could face, followed by the stigma experienced by the daughters, which could occur in different contexts, from educational establishments to health centers. A duality was identified in terms of responses oriented to the valuation of capacities, highlighting the confidence in intellectual capacity, which depended on the emotional stability in which their daughters found themselves. A link is found between Age/Life Cycle Stage, perceived and anticipated stigma, and emotional capacity. Finally, there is an emerging finding involving parental figures. Conclusion: Stigmas related to the valuation of capacities of women with BPD diagnosis are evidenced, which are increased due to gender inequalities in a patriarchal society. The essential role of support networks, mostly composed of mothers, is highlighted, reflecting gender stereotypes established by society. Finally, the importance of education about the diagnosis is emphasized, as this allows for the reduction of stigma, since the people interviewed with greater knowledge about the diagnosis tended to express less stigma towards their daughters.
