Abstract
The objective of this research work was to determine the effective irrigation surface that supplies the Pencahue canal. The methodology consisted of obtaining a model that simulates the reality of the Pencahue valley using the "WEAP" (Water evaluation and planning) software as a model for the management of the valley's water resources. The results show the fragility of the canal that is supplied by the Lircay River (rainfall regime) influences the availability of water in the summer season in addition to a greater demand for irrigation. Due to this, it has been necessary to increase the availability of water with a pumping station which will initially extract 1,98 m3 s-1 from the Claro river to the Pencahue canal. This work has shown that a good application of water resources in arable land entails a great responsibility, not only monetary but also intellectual, since knowing the characteristics of the places where irrigation infrastructures of a great magnitude are built, considering a good design, administration, and maintenance will result in the effective application of water resources which some time ago we considered "infinite".
