Abstract
This study focused on the identification and evaluation of secondary metabolites produced by endophytic fungi isolated from Nothofagus antarctica collected in the Andes Mountains, Ñuble region, Chile. Nine strains of endophytic fungi were isolated, and their extracts were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic bacteria. The extract that showed the highest activity was from strain Tcht 2-1. This extract demonstrated high efficacy in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, including the methicillin-resistant strain (S. aureus MRSA), with inhibition zones greater than 20 mm, classifying it as highly active. The active metabolites were characterized using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), identifying compounds with significant antibacterial capacity. The results suggest that endophytic fungi from N. antarctica could be a promising source of bioactive compounds with applications in the control of pathogenic bacteria, particularly S. aureus. However, further studies are needed to optimize cultivation conditions that maximize the production of these bioactive compounds.
