Abstract
The present work was made with the objective of analyzing the requirements for the appearance of algal blooms of Didymosphenia geminata, its advance in Chilean water bodies and the possible effects on the ecosystems of a selection of protected areas. This was made possible with bibliographical research about the physical-chemical characteristics of rivers from different countries around the world with D. geminata presence, as well as studies about those areas. Information on the advance of Didymo in Chilean water bodies was obtained from official sources and was used to make maps with spatio-temporal information of the most important areas according to certain selection criteria. Another selection was made to determine the protected areas of greatest interest and vulnerability to Didymo, then a search was made of the species of flora and fauna living in the selected areas and the possible effects that Didymo could have on them, in a group and ecosystem level, as well as mention of the possible impacts on the human use of the water bodies by Didymo.
